No 'negative sense' implied: Ex. 兵馬俑的氣勢我領教過了, 還真有意思。

Editor: well, maybe not negative. But you missed smthing important: because of the original sense of the word (a polite word), its use as "experience" is humorous; as you would say in English, "I have had the pleasure of being reprimanded in front of the whole staff"
