<< review queue entry 36178 - submitted by 'jsmith' >> This is 汗 as in 可汗, which you have. http://dict.revised.moe.edu.tw, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genghis_Khan and Google translate give this pronunciation http://zidian.teachercn.com/han/Word_5219.html Alternatively, if you add the second reading to 汗, you could delete this entry and replace it with one for 成吉思 --------------------------------------------------- Editor: You can't trust Wp on orthography. They have both Chéng Jí Sī Hán and Chéngjísī Hán in the same article. ABC regards 成吉思汗 as a single-word name ~ "Chéngjísīhán (1162-1227) n. Genghis Khan" After checking various sources, I surmise that 汗[han2] is not a word, but rather a character used in words like 汗国, 可汗 and 成吉思汗. 可汗 is a loanword, "an originally Altaic and subsequently Central Asian title for a sovereign or military ruler, widely used by medieval nomadic Turko-Mongol tribes living to the north of China" [Wikipedia] and its component characters were adopted for transliteration. Because 汗[han2] does not have other senses ("sweat" is 汗[han4], etc.) it can be said to have the meaning "khan", but that does not mean it can be used as a word on its own. |
