I understand that we do not include articles before nouns.
(Incidentally, just watched a DVD, English Title "No Strings Attached"; Mandarin
title (Taiwan) "飯飯之交", which I thought rather clever.

Editor: Yeah, a clever title.

We *do* allow articles when it makes the meaning clearer. This is a marginal case, perhaps, but
"acquaintance" has an uncountable noun sense as well as the more common countable sense.

Wiktionary:
Noun
acquaintance
1 (uncountable) A state of being acquainted, or of having intimate, or more than slight or superficial,
knowledge; personal knowledge gained by intercourse short of that of friendship or intimacy

"I know of the man; but have no acquaintance with him."

2. ...
Diff:
= 泛泛之交 泛泛之交 [fan4 fan4 zhi1 jiao1] /an acquaintance/
# + 泛泛之交 泛泛之交 [fan4 fan4 zhi1 jiao1] /acquaintance/
