But the "Point" in West Point originally had the meaning 地點 or 地方, I surmise. (Looking at the map, I see it is unlikely to be the 岬 sense of "point".) It seems to me to make more sense to regard 西點 as a *single* word coined by directly translating "west point" word-by- word, but without regard to the original sense of "point". I'm not sure about my reasoning, and it is not a very important matter, but ABC agrees with my conclusion anyway: "西点[-點] Xīdiǎn n. 〈loan〉 West Point (U.S.A)" |
