I heard the commentator say this last night when I was watching Wimbledon
and a line judge called a ball out but the chair ref called it in. But I'd still
appreciate some confirmation.

Editor: It's not necessarily about a death sentence, or even the legal system. As the characters
改 and判 suggest, it simply means "amend a judgement". MoE mentions the sports context
specifically in its definition: 法官或體育裁判更改原先所作的判決

nciku likewise:
1. 法院更改原来所作的判决。
2. 体育比赛或其他赛事中,裁判或评委更改原来的裁决。
Diff:
- 改判 改判 [gai3 pan4] /to commute (a death sentence)/
# + 改判 改判 [gai3 pan4] /to commute (a death sentence)/to overrule or change a judgement/
+ 改判 改判 [gai3 pan4] /to amend a judgement/to overrule the original decision/to commute (a sentence)/
