<< review queue entry 35425 - submitted by 'alanwatson' >> See MoE, Yahoo Taiwan. I saw this on a sign in Taiwan boasting that the best materials had been selected. Editor: I haven't been able to verify "adopt" yet, but it seems plausible. Feel free to submit again with an example. Many dictionaries have something like the other two senses: "to pick; to select". That's exactly what's in FLTRP Online, for example, and ABC. But that is not really adequate to cover the range of usage, it seems to me. For example, (1) to capture (data): 动作撷取 = motion capture & 擷取卡 = capture card (for video capture). 实验四装置:垂直传输管、接仪器与资料撷取用的计算机 "Lab4 apparatus: vertical transfer line, computer for instrumentation and data capture" (2) 天线的全长取决于要撷取的播送类型 -- to pick up (a signal) When I looked, this seemed to be the sense given at Yahoo Taiwan, rather than the submitted definitions. (3) 《英国病人》撷取1997年奥斯卡最佳影片奖 -- "pick", "select" & "adopt" don't work here (4) In MoE's example -- 請勿隨便擷取花木 -- it's "pick" but not in the sense of "select", as suggested by the juxtaposition of "pick" and "select". MoE's definition is 採取, which suggests "to take", which would work for their example. That would work in the following example too, I think: 不应当像宰鹿般,撷取了它的麝香后,就丢弃了 它的躯体 (5) 至今,知识的撷取仍被视为是专家系统发展的瓶颈 -- Here, it is "acquisition" (of knowledge) for use in expert systems (computing) (6) "to take" seems to work in the following example, as well as the sentence in (3) above, etc. 我将会撷取你们的文字、组织成歌词、配乐,再把它录成一首歌放进我1998年8月即将推出的新专辑。 "I will take your words, organize them, set them to music, and record it as a song on my new album which is coming out in August, 1998." [jukuu] (7) 选择一个容易撷取的组合(比如重复或连续的数字或字母,比如1111,1234,BBBB或BCDE)作为密码 -- here, it seems to be "recall" but I can't find another example like that. |
