Here's an example:『如果李娜周日在决赛折桂，将成为第一位赢下网球大满贯赛单打冠军的亚洲人。』 MOE：晉代郤詵曾以「桂林之一枝」對晉武帝比喻自己舉賢良對策的才能，為天下第一。後人遂以折桂比喻科舉及第。亦作「攀桂」。 Apparently it was used to indicating passed the imperial exams at some point, but now it seems to apply to any big crowning achievement or win. Maybe it's only applicable to sports though? |
