An odd wording -- "give dowry" doesn't sound idiomatic ... and is there some
sort of dowry that is not "for marriage"?

Editor: 聘 is the gifts you must give to the bride. They can be quite symbolic though, it's not a "bride-price".
The marriage engagement is only definitive when the gifts have been offered and accepted.

# + 下聘 下聘 [xia4 pin4] /to give dowry for marriage/
+ 下聘 下聘 [xia4 pin4] /to send the betrothal gifts/(figuratively) to conclude a marriage/
