Editor: Yves, I changed this to sth that seems to me more idiomatic.
Let me know if the meaning is not quite right, ok?

Some semi-random examples of "sit around waiting" from a web search ~

1) He would have to be a man willing to make history, not sit around waiting for it to happen.

2) Sometimes, though, you don't want to sit around waiting for a large download to finish so
that you can turn off your computer before you leave or go to bed.

I guess it means "waste time waiting" as per NC's example ~

他们上午不来,咱们别干等了。
They're not coming this morning. Let's not waste time waiting for them.
Diff:
# 乾等 干等 [gan1 deng3] /to wait in vain/to sit and wait/
+ 乾等 干等 [gan1 deng3] /to wait in vain/to sit around waiting/
