I couldn't find this in the several dictionaries I checked. In jukuu examples it seems to be
a construct: "... hence it is called ..."

One such jukuu example:
雄性成体头顶有一突出的骨冠,在下背部有一「片」灰色或银白色毛(故称「银背」)
Editor: yes that means commonly "hence the name"
