It's *not* a generic term ("applying to any member of a group or class" -- Encarta) because you can't say that
each of the various schools was a 诸子百家.

You can say
"Cancer is a generic term for a large group of diseases that can affect any part of the body. " (i.e. each one of
those diseases is a cancer)

but you can't say
"诸子百家 is a generic term for the various schools of thought during the period from pre-Qin times to the early
Han Dynasty" (because 道家, for example, can not be said to be a 诸子百家)

- 諸子百家 诸子百家 [zhu1 zi3 bai3 jia1] /Hundred Schools of Thought, generic term for the philosophical schools of the Spring and Autumn and Warring States Periods (770-220BC)/
