<< review queue entry 34503 - submitted by 'alanwatson' >> I am a bit hesitant about adding these as they might just be thought of as constructs but the meaning is specifically eldest son/daughter and not just old man/woman. Other dicts all have them, Zillions of g hits. Editor: I don't think they are constructs. From our definitions of 長 and 男, you might well think 長男 means "old man." I found one big dictionary that has 长女 but not 长男, and in jukuu there are just 8 example sentences for 长男. 长子 and 大女儿 may be more common words in Chinese for eldest brother/sister. A lot of the g hits would be on Japanese webpages e.g. google "長男" = 16.3 million But google +"長男" restricted to Japanese webpages = 10.4 million and google +"长男" on simplified Chinese pages = 2.7 million |
