Well, Encarta's definition of "cliff" is "high, steep rock face" so "high and steep" could be regarded as redundant. The 2nd MoE definition says "precipitous precipice" -- much the same thing again. 形容 here does not mean that 悬崖峭壁 is an adjective "precipitous" rather than a noun "precipice". Although literally 形容 means "describes", in a definition like this it just means "refers to" or "signifies": i.e. "悬崖峭壁 refers to 山勢高直險峻 (mountain features which are sheer and forbidding)" From the examples I have found, 悬崖峭壁 appears to be used mostly in the plural. |
