<< review queue entry 32154 - submitted by 'richwarm' >> QUOTE Manchuria is a historical name given to a vast geographic region in northeast Asia. Depending on the definition of its extent, Manchuria either falls entirely within People's Republic of China, or is divided between China and Russia. The region is commonly referred to as Northeast China (simplified Chinese: 东北; traditional Chinese: 東北; pinyin: Dōngběi), and historically referred as Guandong (simplified Chinese: 关东; traditional Chinese: 關東; pinyin: guāndōng), which literally means "East of the (Shanhaiguan) Pass/Mountain". UNQUOTE http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchuria "Eastern Japan" may be an ambiguous term. Maps of "eastern Japan" in Google images show the north-east half of Honshu (with or without Hokkaido included). In other words, these maps show the areas east of Tokyo and include the western coast of that portion of Japan. Also, I found "A moderate earthquake shook Tokyo and eastern Japan at around 0328 GMT Tuesday" (suggesting that the bureau of meteorology does not include Tokyo in "eastern Japan"). http://www.busitu.numazu-ct.ac.jp/mochizuki/english/mpeastjp.htm shows a "Map of obsidian sources in Eastern Japan" which does *not* include the Kanto area, but *does* include part of the west coast (Sea of Japan coast). How about "region including Tokyo and nearby prefectures"? Editor: unambiguous now |
