Mengzi remarked that it would be useless for the one who ran 50 meters to sneer at the one who ran 100 meters. In reality, since both soldiers are retreating, there is hardly any difference between them. Later, this phrase came to be used as a metaphor for when an individual has committed the same crime or made the same mistake as someone else. Furthermore, this individual thinks that they are better than the other person who committed that same transgression, and would look down on that person, even though there is really no difference between the two of them."
