<< review queue entry 30644 - submitted by 'ycandau' >> was previously in the dict as 饒了 饶了 [rao2 le5] /please forgive sb!/let sb off!/please spare (him, me etc)/I ask you to exonerate (him)./ and was erased by myself and Richard. Rich made this comment: "I think this is what Chao lists as use #2 of 了, namely "command in response to a new situation" -- he offers the example 醒了,嘿! Wake up, hey! (The new situation here would be that sb is interceding, begging for mercy.) But if you decide we should retain 饶了, it's fine with me to re-submit it." I think I can find a number of sentences in which 了 has no visible grammatical meaning, and certainly not an imperative one: 每一次饶了他,我良心都受谴责; 可是每一回打他,我都有点心痛不忍 (notice 饶了他, but 打他) 放下武器,我们就饶了你们 去呢,她也不会饶了他 虎妞岂肯轻饶了他呢! so it looks like 饒了 is really a lexical unit. I know of at least another verb for which this also happens: 殺 It seems that 殺 is always followed by 了, where another verb wouldn't be. For instance you say 我要殺了你, not 我要殺你 Editor: well, at least Julien was convinced... |

# Editors beware! This is not a mistake, I do not consider this as a construct + 饒了 饶了 [rao2 le5] /to spare/to forgive/ |
