while French 放兔子(which meant "not pay a prostitute for her services" in
the XIXth century), Chinese 放鸽子, whose origin also seem to have
connexions with brothels, but I'm not sure I fully understand stuff I've found
on websites.
At least I've always heard this expression used for "to stand up someone".
