I don't find anything that quite matches that sense in the first couple of dictionaries I looked at; but just "to pray" might not be a suitable expression either. I do find one more thing in other dictionaries: [书面语] (削; 断绝) cut off. It looks like it may only occur in the word 祝发. Editor:I think "to pray " is better than "to invoke". Yes it does mean "cut":南国之人,祝发而裸。"they cut their hair and go naked" (Chinese wore their hair long); presumably without any religious meaning. But it's covered by the entry for 祝发 |
