Not sure if I've reworded the best way, but this example shows it's not necessarily "animate nouns":
幸好昨天下了一整天中雨,小树小草们终于可以饱饮一顿了。

Here are some comments off the web on 们 as a plural marker:
1 "most of case is related with human, sometime it could be used for animal but only take them have human mind."
2 <<it functions as a general plural marker, and I think it can be used for every "thing":human,animals,things(just we
