However, in the context of explaining the meaning of 草木, I think it's less likely to be apt than "vegetation" (the mass of plants growing in a particular place). e.g. 山坡上草木茂盛，郁郁葱葱。 On the other hand, one dictionary gives the following example: 一切草木都需要水和阳光。 All plants need water and light. Another example: 春天到了，草木都发芽了，餐厅装修好了，大家来吧。 I think "grasslands and forests" is a slightly fanciful interpretation of 草木 and that "grass and trees" would be better, but I can't see examples where "vegetation" or "plants" would not do at least as well as "grass and trees". I think that "flora" ("plant life, especially all the plants found in a particular country, region, or time regarded as a group" [Encarta]) corresponds better to 植物群, and is less apt for 草木 than "vegetation". |
