I don't think 效应 can be used instead of 效果 or 影响 to mean "effect" in the
following sorts of sentences:
怎样写句子取决于主人公做了什么,以及作者想要创造什么样的效果。
她的病对工作有很大的影响。

... and 效应 seems to be used only in a scientific context:
非线性效应可用与速度效应同样的方法处理。
摩擦效应与载荷未见得能成线性关系。
单一基因可能具有很多种效应。
嗜酒成瘾会增加中毒效应。
这里涉及拥挤对于动物的病理效应。
它也可有一种有益的效应,因为它能杀死某些类型的细菌和原生动物。
One dictionary specifies "effect (physics)" but it is also used in biology etc.

There are seven senses of the noun "effect" in Encarta (e.g. the effects of
prolonged malnutrition, I pleaded with them -- but to no effect, the overall
effect of the new decor, special effects in movies, etc.) . I think it is
appropriate to say which one we mean in the definition of 效应. By deleting
"(e.g. greenhouse effect)" from the definition of 效应, and not replacing it
with something similar, we are losing useful information.
