<< review queue entry 29675 - submitted by 'richwarm' >> I think the (anonymous) author of this entry was making things up -- and was determined to use the word "scale" ;-) "broad scale" is a *noun phrase*, not an adjective -- I can't find an example of usage where 大型 means that (after scanning jukuu's 100 examples). Perhaps the adjective "broadscale" was intended, but I don't think that is quite apt either. That word is not even in Encarta dict at all. Webster says it only dates from 1939, and defines it as "broad in extent, range, or effect", which is a bit different, I think, from what 大型 means (which is basically "big"). Similarly, "wide scale" is probably a misspelling of "widescale", which Wiktionary defines as "involving all or most of the relevant area" -- which is not really what 大型 means. Interestingly, Wiktionary seems to be the only dictionary which defines "widescale" or "wide-scale" (I consulted about 5 dicts, including Webster.) The top google hit for "widescale" is the Wiktionary definition! And, although "widescale" has 3 million G hits, most of the hits on the first few pages are from sources of dubious reliability like www.lightreading.com, www.pharmatimes.com etc. Can anyone find an example where 大型 is not used as an adjective, or does not basically just mean "large"? Based on the jukuu examples, I'd say that 大型 is essentially used to describe sth that is *phyically* large. The only exception I found in 100 examples was 处理特殊极其大型的问题时，所有系统都需要巧妙地进行协调。 So I don't think widescale, broadscale etc are correct. And, as an adjective, "large-scale" is spelled with a hyphen. |
