汽油 is known as gasoline in the USA and Canada, but in other English
speaking countries; including the UK, Australia, New Zealand and South
Africa, it is known as petrol

Editor: Being Australian, I'm well aware of "petrol" but, in principle, we restrict the vocabulary (and spelling) in our definitions to American English. This helps to keep them a bit shorter.

"Speakers of BrE are likely to understand most AmE terms, examples such as 'sidewalk', 'gas (gasoline/petrol)', 'counterclockwise', or 'elevator (lift)', without any problem." [Wikipedia]
Diff:
