<< review queue entry 29672 - submitted by 'richwarm' >> 光柱 has the sense "light beam" *outside* of the context of physics as well -- e.g. 探照灯射出一道长长的光柱划过天空。-- so ditch the (physics) tag. I can't find references to support "light cross" except C-E dictionaries which seem to have copied their definitions from each other (e.g. ABC, FLTR New Century, www.kejiyingyu.com, www.iciba.com, etc. ... and CC-CEDICT!). Indeed, I have no idea what a "light cross" is. It does not seem to be defined in Encarta, Webster, Wiktionary or Wikipedia "Light pillars are vertical pillars of light above and sometimes below the sun (or moon, Venus, or artificial lights) caused by many many reflections off the large flat face of horizontally falling plate ice crystals..." http://optics.kulgun.net/SunPillar/ See also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_pillar When the light source is the sun, they are called sun pillars or solar pillars. The following entry is in EDICT: 太陽柱 【たいようちゅう】 (n) sun pillar; solar pillar Example of usage: 說明: 這極光看起來怎會如此靠近地平面呢? http://www.phys.ncku.edu.tw/~astrolab/mirrors/apod/ap060305.html |
