<< review queue entry 29690 - submitted by 'laohu489' >> construct Editor: As a construct, 温室气体 would be 温室 + 气体, but 温室 means "greenhouse" according to our definition. According to Encarta, that word means either (1) a glass or transparent plastic structure, often on a metal or wooden frame, in which plants that need heat, light, and protection from the weather are grown; or (2) a transparent plastic dome or cover for part of an aircraft. So, as a construct, 温室气体 would be a gas associated with one of these two kinds of plastic structures. Of course, 温室气体 is readily understood as a direct translation from the English "greenhouse gas." But 温室气体 and "greenhouse gas" have to be understood as new concepts (i.e. not derived from their components). That's why dictionaries like Encarta define "greenhouse gas": it's not a construct. The expression 室内设计 (interior design), which was proposed by editor laohu489 in May this year for *addition* to CEDICT was not dismissed as a construct -- for the same sort of reason. |
