I think the original def is far from the mark.
The example given on nciku is a classic:
泥菩萨过河——自身难保
I think for this kind of saying it will be better to make an entry for the whole saying, even if:
- the first part is often quoted alone;
- the second part can take various forms.
Diff:
- 歇後語 歇后语 [xie1 hou4 yu3] /stable figure of speech contrasting two incompatible parts, such as English "snowball's chances in hell" or Chinese 馬尾穿豆腐|马尾穿豆腐 stringing beancurd on horsetail/
+ 歇後語 歇后语 [xie1 hou4 yu3] /saying in which the second part, uttered after a pause or totally left out, is the intended meaning of the allegory presented in the first part/
