I think "jinx" is probably a mistranslation. "jinxing mouth" is a Chinese attempting to translate "inauspicious talk that causes disaster". Miles << review queue entry 3204 - submitted by 'richwarm' >> These two words are among the first Chinese words I learned. My wife used one to describe our son when he was 3 or 4 years old, while the other was used to reprove me if I spoke of some misfortune that might occur in the future. Each of them describes human behaviour by reference to animals which possess sensitive olfactory capabilities and are regarded as repulsive -- crows and flies. 烏鴉嘴 has much the same superstitious sentiment as expresssions like "knock on wood". There's an interesting discussion of 烏鴉嘴 at http://www.proz.com/kudoz/799200 This webpage offers "jinx" as a translation for 烏鴉嘴 and says, in part: ... |
