笑窩 is the PRC's preferred orthography << review queue entry 24726 - submitted by 'jasonlaw' >> Up for everyone to review, an intense battle about which one gets to be labeled "variant of" and which one gets to say it is "also written" as something else (per style guidelines)? ACE, and Guifan seem to prefer the term 笑窝. Guifan's definition for 笑涡 is "现在一般写作“笑窝.” ACE does not have 笑 涡 as an entry, but includes it as an alternate in the entry for 笑窝. ABC lists its entry as 笑窝/涡(儿). The Taiwan Ministry of Education has an entry for 笑渦, but not for 笑窩. A non-restricted Google search gives you 13,800,000 for 笑窝, 837,000 for 笑涡 (unquoted). With quotes and restrictions, "笑渦" on traditional pages gets 13k, "笑涡" on simplified pages gets around 202k, "笑窩" on traditional pages gets 17k, and "笑窝" on simplified pages gets 31k. Google image search for 笑窝/"笑窝" gives you more hits and a greater ratio of pictures showing dimples, the search for 笑涡/"笑涡" gives you fewer hits and a smaller ratio of the pictures are images of dimples. On a slightly related note, I think 酒窝 is preferred over 酒涡, on the Mainland at least, I think the Google hits verify this, and 小酒窝 is a popular Chinese song written with that variant. |
