My arguments: - 字形 is much more common, it can't be made a variant; in the sense of 'character shape' it would be a mistake to spell 字型; - 字型 means only font; I've tried to research this on Internet, and everything I found seems to support this. I quote for instance Wikipedia: 書法領域中的字体、字形，以及電腦領域的电脑字体並不能 混爲一談。在中國 大陸和台灣，“字体”指篆、隷、楷、草等，日本則常用書體 一詞。“字形”指一 個漢字的筆畫及結構（關係到點、橫、直、撇、捺和字身比 例）。至於英文 的“font”，被大陸和台灣分別譯為电脑字体與字型。 I would add that I have personnally encountered 字形 as meaning "font"; some would say that this is incorrect, but Chinese do tend to mix 形/型, and as you said it's prescriptive vs descriptive. |
