Yes, I remember Totoro, he looked quite like a chinchilla.
You are right about 栗鼠, but the present entry in Cedict is wrong anyway.

I found a store today selling these, but there seems to be a lot of names for the chinchilla in Chinese. The lady at the store said the above entry, but this also seems to be the name of some cartoon character ‘Totoro'. Assume it is japanese. Wiki lists about 4 different names with 绒鼠, 毛丝鼠 and 栗鼠. I think though that the last one is not accurate. Seems to me that it is a chipmunk in most cases.
Anyone else want to work on this one? I just don't have the patience now to sort it out.
