普渡 is nowadays synonymous/an abbreviation of Ghost Festival 中元普渡, but it also refers to the general ritual of making offerings, especially to wandering spirits (rather than gods or ancestors)

LA

Ream weight is the weight of a 500 stack of papers.
https://www.vistaprint.com/hub/paper-weight-chart

Some copy shops I frequent use 磅 to differentiate paper thickness, for example "150磅" would mean some thick cardstock

https://paperbox.com.tw/%E5%8D%B0%E5%88%B7%E7%B4%99%E5%BC%B5%E4%BB%A4%E9%87%8D%E3%80%81%E5%9F%BA%E9%87%8D%E5%B0%8D%E7%85%A7%E8%A1%A8/

"早期台灣紙業界常用「磅重」計重,單位常以「lb」或「P」表示。
磅重指的是為一令(500張)全開紙的重量,但因無法辨認是四六版(31″ x 43″)或菊全版(25″ x 35″),常常造成很多混淆和很多爭議,因此磅重在業界漸漸少用,現在多改用國際單位g/m2作為業界標準。"

1) Much of what you proposed in your definition doesn't seem to be supported by the "moa.gov.tw" link, so I have looked at other sources. It's difficult because some sources use different names for the same thing, or provide contradictory information. Your link suggests that it's a green manure crop, while other sources indicate that it's used as a vegetable.

2) "boy choy" should be "bok choy".

3) "edible rape" does not seem to be a widely used term in English.

4) I don't know why you included the following information:
+"小油菜" 263,000
+"蕓薹" 151,000

5) It seems napa cabbage and turnips are not typically considered part of what is meant by 白菜型油菜.

油菜 refers to 3 sub-types of Brassica plants
"油菜屬於十字花科蕓苔屬植物,原產於歐洲及西伯利亞,為溫帶作物,有甘藍型油菜(Brassica napus L.)、白菜型油菜(Brassica rapa L.)及芥菜型油菜(Brassica juncea L. (Czern.))之分,臺灣常見為甘藍型與白菜型等兩種。"

I would suggest puting the Brassica rapa (usually referring to edible leaves) definition first, as it is the most common colloquial definition (at least from my experience in Taiwan). A Google search also tends to show cooking recipes for the leaves like komatsuna or boy choy.

合聘 (joint appointment; when a professor takes up a second assignment/role in another department)
I've never heard of "engage" a teacher (could be misinterpreted to mean engaging)
- National Taiwan University bilingual glossary https://sec.ntu.edu.tw/001/Upload/33/relfile/10795/3776/724b85f4-4aa1-495d-a52f-612dd3478d1f.pdf

不分系 (undeclared university students, or students of non-fixed programs)
at least in Taiwan, it's starting to become used (since students have tradtionally had to declare a department/major for entry)

Editor:
1) Thanks for proposing these additions and improvements!

2) Please break up batches like this into multiple, smaller submissions. Otherwise, your batch may sit on the queue for a long time, because it generally only gets processed when an editor happens to have a substantial amount of time to devote to working on it uninterrupted. (There are so many things to check.) I think this batch could have been split into 5 submissions. Processing 不分系, for example, did not depend on how the other words were processed, so it could have been a separate single-line submission.

3) > "I've never heard of 'engage' a teacher"
I'm familiar with that sense of "engage", and it's the very first sense mentioned in American Heritage Dictionary.
engage, v.t. 1. To obtain or contract for the services of; employ: engage a carpenter. [2. ...]
https://ahdictionary.com/word/search.html?q=engage
I'm Australian, and it's common usage in Australia too. However, I agree that it's better if we use alternative, less ambiguous words.

4) 合聘 is specific to Taiwan, the corresponding mainland term being 聯聘, according to LA:
合聘【臺詞】兩個以上的單位聯合僱用同一個員工。【陸】即「聯聘」。

5) Some further 不分系 usage:
將來走向以院招生,大一、大二不分系,
In future, students will be enrolled into colleges rather than departments, and will not declare a specialism in their freshman and sophomore years.

其實,「分院不分系」的做法八、九年前中央大學理學院就實施過,
In fact, admission by college rather than department was tried eight or nine years ago by the College of Sciences at National Central University.

元智大學管理學院去年開始試行大一「分院不分系」招生,把國際企業、財稅金融、會計、企管四個系,各分出十個名額實施大一不分系,
Last year, the College of Management at Yuan Ze University experimentally began admitting students without assigning them to departments during their first year. The college's Departments of International Business, Finance, Accounting and Business Administration each gave up 10 first-year places to allow this.

adverb
to put full effort into doing something;
to do something with all one's strength

- https://tw.hinative.com/questions/25666407
- https://zhidao.baidu.com/question/64905303.html
--------------------------

Editor: Well, I don't know if you noticed, but we do have an entry for 卯, and its only verb sense is "to exert one's strength", and 卯起來 is pretty much what you'd expect, based on that.

The entry for 卯 also says that 卯 is a variant of 鉚, and we do already have an entry for 鉚起來, so 卯起來 can be said to be implicitly in the dictionary. However, I'm going to add it explicitly, as you propose.

* * *

Etymologically, what I think may have happened is this:

鉚 (from 钅(金 jīn) ‘metal’ and 卯 mǎo phonetic) acquired the meaning of "to rivet" only relatively recently, likely in the 19th or early 20th century, after riveting became widespread following the Industrial Revolution. 鉚 is not found in early dictionaries such as Kangxi—at least, not with the "rivet" sense.

Early rivets were struck in using a hammer. The process involved heating the rivet until it was red-hot, inserting it into a pre-drilled hole, and then hammering the tail end to form a head while the other side was supported by a heavy tool called a bucking bar or dolly. As the rivet cooled, it contracted, pulling the materials together tightly. This method was widely used in shipbuilding, bridge construction, and boiler-making.

That early method of riveting required intense effort to strike the hot rivet precisely, which presumably led to 鉚 acquiring the figurative meaning of "to exert all one's strength".

Eventually, the 金 radical was dropped for this figurative sense, as no metal rivets were involved, leading to 卯起來 becoming far more common than 鉚起來 in modern usage:

Google results (with "verbatim" option):
"鉚起來" 1,920
"卯起來" 337,000

"铆起来" 16,700
"卯起来" 285,000

certificates receipts prescriptions etc aren't typically "drawn up"?
other long formal documents like sales agreements or contracts yes maybe

I think "to issue" or "to write up" might be a better choice of wording

For example,
The Taiwan Tax Agency uses "to issue"
Taxation >> 開立不實統一發票營業人 "Business Entity Issuing False Uniform
Invoices"
https://www.mof.gov.tw/Eng/htmlList/20467ff6d86140429a6a235b412c277e

開立收據 "give / issue a receipt" https://engoo.com.tw/blog/%E4%B8%BB%E9%A1%8C%E9%A1%9E/invoice_receipt/
-----------------------------

Editor: When the grammatical object of 開立 is a document (a certificate, receipt, or prescription etc), 開立 denotes the *creation* (by writing on a piece of paper), not the *issuing*, of the document.

兩岸詞典:
開單立據;簽寫。例 「開立發票」。

國語辭典:
簽寫。如:「商店買賣貨物都要開立統一發票,作為政府徵稅的依據。」

The above definitions are not saying that 開立 means "to issue".

Similarly, KEY (a C-E dictionary) defines 開立 as
1. draw up (a document)
2. open (a bank or other account)

* * *

"draw up" means "to compose or write in a set form" [American Heritage Dictionary], which conveys the idea of 開立 reasonably well, given that these documents tend to be created in a set format. A document that one "draws up" need not be lengthy; for example, one can "draw up a short list of candidates".

Your suggestion "write up" is reasonable too, but it's not perfect either, since people don't typically "write up" certificates.

> "Business Entity Issuing False Uniform Invoices"
I have no problem with that translation. As a word-by-word *literal* translation, it's inaccurate, but the loss of accuracy is of little consequence since a business entity that "writes up" false uniform invoices is almost certainly issuing them as well, and the loss of literal accuracy is offset by a gain in the naturalness and idiomaticity of the English.
Diff:

Editor: Thanks for the follow-up submission. Your first link does indeed include usage of 剪 in the sense you proposed, although it seems that 剪 is also used in the context of audio editing.
E.g. 我本来还想着用剪映剪音频,结果发现必须导入视频才行,好吧,思路错了。
(Note: 剪映 is CapCut, ByteDance's video editing app.)

Here are some additional quotes from that first link of yours, focusing on the ones where 剪 is used as a freestanding word rather than as part of a compound (because if it were only used in compounds, such as 剪片, it would require a "bound form" label.)

影片該如何剪?

怎麼剪的有效率?

不過剪的內容會再更細節一些

字幕這部分通常是放在最後常上因為字幕也要對上關鍵影格所以前面可以先剪完

一口氣剪完容易累,節奏跟情緒也會不穩定分批分量剪,你會發現你每次剪都比上次好一點

如果自己剪自己看可能容易視覺麻痺看不出盲點

期待各位夥伴剪出自己滿意的好作品

谘 exists as a "simplified" character, but is not commonly used in either China or Taiwan;

- discussion of 谘 https://tw.hinative.com/questions/20180044
- suggested 繁體+簡體 of this dictionary commonly shared by Baidu https://www.zdic.net/hans/%E8%AB%AE%E8%A9%A2

- 谘 is just a simplification "簡化字" https://chardb.iis.sinica.edu.tw/meancompare/8AEE/8C18
VS
- 咨 is the word with an actual definiton https://chardb.iis.sinica.edu.tw/meancompare/8AEE/54A8
---------------------------

Editor:
1) You propose to delete the entry where 咨 is the trad form:
- 咨 咨 [zi1] /to consult/

But 咨 is used as the trad form in several words*, such as 咨文 and 咨嗟. So we want to keep that entry (with an updated definition).

* Here are some examples:

"Locke himself best summed up his symbolic importance in his response to the State of the Union."

2) Officially, 咨 is not the simplified form of 諮.
But for *practical* purposes, it *is* the de facto simplified form of 諮.

... which is why 兩岸詞典 indicates 咨 as the trad form of 諮, not 谘.
https://www.moedict.tw/~%E8%AB%AE

"zīxún", for example, is normally written as 諮詢 in Taiwan and 咨询 on the mainland.

There is a Wikipedia article 諮商心理學 (counselling psychology). Its corresponding 大陆简体 article title is 咨商心理学, not 谘商心理学.

If we don't treat 咨 as the simp form of 諮 in cc-cedict, we get some unpalatable consequences. For example, we would need to indicate 谘询 as the simp form for 諮詢, whereas in practice, 咨询 is the corresponding simplified form.

So I'm making an exception to our usual rule* in this case, indicating 咨 as the simplified form of 諮.

* The usual rule is to indicate as a simp form only what is indicated as a simp form by the documentation of the PRC simplification system (esp. the TGH: 通用规范汉字表).

花市新寵「空氣鳳梨」,有「地表最強植物」之稱。郭睿軒指出,其原生地為相對較乾旱的環境,白天溫度高,很乾燥,但夜間氣溫下降,濕度變高,所以多數空氣鳳梨像仙人掌一樣,光合作用行景天酸代謝模式,並且利用葉片上特化的鱗片構造吸收空氣中的水分。

Editor <goldyn_chyld>: m -> M, 莫蕾 same in simp and trad
----------------------------------

1) "hun4 jiang4" should be a single word: hun4jiang4

2) Same for "mo4 lei3"

3) Re: "see 莫蕾[mo4 lei3]"
- This is a syntax that should be used as the *entire* gloss: /see 莫蕾[mo4 lei3]/. Not as *part* of a gloss.

- As a rule, we don't link to synonyms, antonyms, or other terms related to the headword. An exception can be made if it helps to make the definition clearer, but I don't think that's the case here, since 莫蕾 is defined as /mole (Mexican sauce)/. To link to a related word, we can use an expression like "also written as ..." if we don't want the entire gloss to be "/see .../"
