持续 on its own doesn't really mean "sustainable", usually it appears as part of 可持续 (literally "can continue") as in 可持续发展 "sustainable development". More accurate would be to change "sustainable" to "to sustain".
I could not find any evidence for 持续 on its own meaning "preservation". Even the AI summary on MDBG.net has its example sentence as "文化遗产的持续保护是我们的责任 (The preservation of cultural heritage is our responsibility)", where "preservation" clearly refers to 持续保护 (literally "continued protection") and not to 持续 on its own.
"to last" as a definition is a bit misleading, it implies "to last" as in "this machine was built to last", but it's really most commonly used as in "the war lasted 6 years".
"to persist" is okay, but it could probably stand to be removed for clarity because it's mostly just an extrapolation from "to continue" and it's not as accurate of a definition as "to continue" and "to sustain".
Diff:
- 持續 持续 [chi2 xu4] /to continue/to persist/to last/sustainable/preservation/
# + 持續 持续 [[chi2xu4]] /to continue; to sustain; to last (for a certain amount of time)/

+ 持續 持续 [[chi2xu4]] /to continue; to last; to persist/
