Capital "W" would imply that it's the opposite of Oriental (and not a compass direction as in "southern right whale"), but apparently, it's not "Western" for this bird. There are some bird names that start with "Oriental", but the "western meadowlark", for example, seems to be so named because it is found mostly in the western part of North America, not because it is found in the "Western world" -- hence, the lowercase "w". |
