<< review queue entry 75635 - submitted by 'kbaiko' >> According to https://www.zdic.net/hans/%E7%94%9A 很,极:~好。~快。 超过:日~一日。 方言,什么:~事? 表示进一层的意思:~至。~或。 Sense 1 - 甚为, 甚微, 甚嚣尘上, etc, generally 甚 + adjective Sense 2 - 日甚一日 (every day is worse than the last), 甚于, etc Sense 3 - I think this is "what" and "any" from the original definition, which I actually thought were wrong until I checked dictionaries and realized it was from a dialect (and maybe related the shen2 entry) Sense 4 - 甚而, 甚或, 甚至, 甚且, etc --------------------------------------------- Editor: I'd say that while 甚至 means "so much so that", 甚 on its own does not. Ex. 1 「他工作非常投入,甚而都忘了下班」 甚而 can be understood as roughly "[his involvement in his work] was excessive (甚) and (而) ...". It doesn't make sense to think of it as "so much so that" + "and". Ex. 2 「這道題不但我解不出來,甚至老師也感到為難」 Similarly, 甚至 here can be thought of as "going beyond (甚) [me failing to solve it] to (至) [the teacher also finding it difficult]". Again, it doesn't make sense to think of it as "so much so that" + "to". In other words, in 甚而 and 甚至, 甚 still means "exceeding; going beyond", it seems to me. |
