I don't think it means "Japanese mochi".
- Mochi is typically made from boiled glutinous rice that is pounded to a mash, then molded into shapes that fit into the hand.
- Nian gao is typically made from glutinous rice *flour* (rather than rice grains) that is mixed with sugar and liquid ingredients, then steamed or baked.

Wp ~ Mochi (餅) is Japanese rice cake made of mochigome, a short-grain japonica glutinous rice. The rice is pounded into paste and molded into the desired shape.
