Here, the writer is scornful, not of 人权卫道士, but rather of 人权卫道士的假面具.

It's not that 卫道士 is in itself derogatory. Like "moralist" and "champion (of a cause)", it can be used to mock, because people who take the high moral ground (moralists) are easily mocked, especially when the cause is one that one disagrees with, or when the cause is worthy but its champions are cynical or hypocritical (虚伪的卫道士) [see example @ above]

But sometimes people proudly refer to themselves as a 卫道士:
在整个采访中,蔡少浩一直强调,我只是白酒的卫道士,“我希望能够影响更多的80后加入到白酒的大军。”

"moralist" examples
