I think this needs clarification. "Modern times" suggests to me "not ancient times" and includes the
present age. Is that the case with 近代? Or is it more like "*recent* times, *not* including the present
age"?

In the CEdict definition of 近代史, that period ends about one hundred years ago. That's quite a way
back to be calling "recent"! ;-)

现代 is also defined as "modern times" but I don't think it's the same as 现代.

The nciku CSCD definition of 剪径 is 拦路抢劫(多见于近代汉语) -- what is meant by 近代汉语 here?

According to the current definitions in CEDICT, it means "modern (times) Chinese language".
Why would N be telling us that a word is part of the modern language?
I presume it is *actually* the Chinese of the late Qing era(?)
ABC's def of 近代汉语 is Modern Chinese/Sinitic language. Does that mean "non-classical Chinese"?
If so, why does N take the trouble to inform us that 剪径 is used in Modern Chinese?

The F def of 近代 is "modern times; capitalist times" -- what is meant by "capitalist times"?

The M def of 近代 seems to be sth like ~
"relatively recent historical times (in respect of Chinese history, refers particularly to the period from the
mid-19th century to the May 4th Movement of 1919)"
Diff:
- 近代 近代 [jin4 dai4] /modern times/
+ 近代 近代 [jin4 dai4] /the not-very-distant past/modern times, excluding recent decades/(in the context of Chinese history) the period from the Opium Wars until the May 4th Movement (mid-19th century to 1919)/capitalist times (pre-1949)/
