妹妹 is often used as slang for a girlfriend or prostitute, just like 哥哥 is boyfriend or 嫖客, this is common knowledge, I guess

as for 妹子:
妹子【现代汉语词典】〈方〉①妹妹。②女孩子。
妹子【现代汉语规范词典】(1)〈口〉妹妹(2)某些地区称女孩子,例如:四川妹子(四川女孩)

Editor: I don't think "esp. girl friend or rival" is very good. But I would have thought the connotation is commonly more like "desirable young female" (as in 四川妹妹的肉体魅力, for example) than specifically "female companion", and anyway, that sort of connotation is not necessarily in 妹妹, is it? It can be something more neutral, as MoE says ~ 同輩中比自己年幼的女性. It's all contextual. Basically, it means "young woman", I think, and it takes on shades on meaning in context. Dictionary users should know that words for family members (like 叔叔 etc) can refer to people outside the family as well. As you say, it's "common knowledge". We take that for granted, and don't always put it in the definition.
