Was the neutral tone on 那 intentional?
Editor: Yes, it was intentional. It follows the tone indicated in
YR Chao's "Chinese Primer" for this expression.
On that subject, another editor commented as follows:
2010-02-13 [ycandau] Well, Chao certainly knew his
business, although I feel that this is hair-splitting.
Any syllable can be de-toned when not emphasized.
But keeping na5 can be a good way to indicate that it is not a
construct, but an idiomatic use.
Diff:
# - 在那兒 在那儿 [zai4 na5 r5] /(adverbial expression indicating that the attention of the subject of the verb is focused on what they are doing, not distracted by anything else)/just ...ing (and nothing else)/
# + 在那兒 在那儿 [zai4 na4 r5] /(adverbial expression indicating that the attention of the subject of the verb is focused on what they are doing, not distracted by anything else)/just ...ing (and nothing else)/
= 在那兒 在那儿 [zai4 na5 r5] /(adverbial expression indicating that the attention of the subject of the verb is focused on what they are doing, not distracted by anything else)/just ...ing (and nothing else)/
