However, it would appear that the most difficult challenge facing the Hong Kong government in promoting its mother-tongue instruction policy is not an educational one, but rather that of "how to wean the public away from its long-standing obsession with English," says Lee Kwok-sung, the Education Department's principal education officer for planning and research. He says with a smile that the task before them is one of "changing people's hearts and minds."

These two "black gold" cases are still ongoing. Whatever the outcome, the charges of corruption, slander and oppression are making quite a sight out of Taiwan's presidential election. Voters are being sorely tested on their ability to see their way clear through all the fog. Sadly, these charges will have an enormous impact on society. No matter who wins, the biggest challenge will be for the politicians to start cleaning up their act.

After Taiwan reverted to Chinese rule in 1945 Taiwanese opera went through a period of intense development, and tea-picking opera enjoyed a 20-year golden age. But nothing lasts forever, unfortunately. Modern technology – especially television and movies – began stealing audiences away in the 1960s, while a succession of natural disasters prompted the government to push for austerity and ask people to hold fewer temple events.

Laws outpace mores
There are many examples of traditional customs in Taiwan that discriminate against women. For instance, there is the idea that married daughters—described as “water tossed from the cup”—have no right to a share in their parents’ property. Yet with changes to the legal system, conceptions of gender equality can gradually become more accepted and eventually even part of tradition.
