<< review queue entry 68735 - submitted by 'ycandau' >> 1. no effort here. =21st= 1.a lesson; a moral 2.to lecture someone; to teach (or give, read) someone a lesson (for mistake or wrongdoing) =Xinhua= (1) [lesson;moral]∶指从错误或挫折中得到的经验 水灾的教训 (2) [education and training]∶教育训练 自无教训。 2. I like a verb sense first, a substantivized use next. I think that's nearly always so. 3. dicts give a mild (more classical?) sense as in Rulin Waishi above. "guidance" is what came to mind. 4. I don't think "moral" is fitting -- "the moral of a story" -- 教训 is the result of sth bad. But I would welcome words beyond "lesson" 5. for the colloquial use, "lecture" is evident but somewhat meh--教训他一顿. However I think "chide" is too mild, can be a short reprimand, and doesn't convey the sense that sb is given an earful in order to teach him a lesson. 6. I think 頓 would apply only to "talking-to" |
