升 is the more common traditional variant over 昇. I will propose the variant character entry separately There is a clear difference between PRC and HK/TW usage. Almost all Google images for simp. are cherry pickers or scissor lifts. There are misc. lifts including of screw-thread lifts which Wp calls "hotel lifts" but that term is uncommon. Despite MoE, these are mostly hydraulic, not electric.
