wouldn't hurt to include the original meaning of this character

【漢語大詞典】
yǐn
yǐn
笑的樣子。
文選・司馬相如・上林賦:「亡是公听然而笑。」
唐・劉禹錫・說驥:「睹之周體,眙然視,听然笑,既而抃隨之。」

this character is archaic, but words like 麵麭 still survive in Japan and Taiwan (not to mention that 麭 is in both Big 5 and JIS), make a search on Google with site:jp or site:tw for examples
【漢語大詞典】糕餅。
【康熙字典】餌也。

=========================================

Editor:
Examples on .jp sites would be irrelevant for a C-E dictionary.
麺麭 is in EDICT as "bread" (labeled "obscure term") but that doesn't imply that 麺麭 is a Chinese word.
Googling ["麵麭" site:.tw] yields only 39 webpages.

Matic finds that both Z & 汉语大字典 say it's "pao4", not "bao1".

康熙字典 says that, too: 音炮。餌也。

MoE likewise ~

釋義: 餌也。見集韻‧去聲‧效韻。

(Click the "Play" button, and tell me what your ears tell you)
I can give you plenty more examples where the voice actors and the presenters of Chinesepod say [mei2 gui1].

It's to users' advantage for CEDICT to challenge what "all dictionaries say" and to give definitions and pr.'s that are different from others — as long as they are valid, of course :-) — rather than just be a carbon copy of the "conventional wisdom" or consensus of other dictionaries.

When a word has optional qingsheng, dictionaries just choose one pr. or the other. Perhaps they choose the one they think is more common, or perhaps they just copy what other dictionaries say, but the result is that users get the impression that the alternative is wrong, when it's not.

You are trying to make CEDICT line up with other dictionaries, because you think that when those dictionaries all say it's qingsheng, that must be the only correct pronunciation.
That's understandable, but wrong.
Dictionaries all say 浙江 is pronounced without qingsheng, but it's just *not true* that the qingsheng pronunciation is incorrect.
Both are correct. I've heard native speakers clearly say it with qingsheng, and YR Chao states explicitly in "Mandarin Primer":
"Some neutral tones are optional, as in 浙江 Jeh.jiang or Jehjiang"
[Pinyin: Zhèjiang and Zhèjiāng]
There are many words which have *optional* neutral tone, but most dictionaries just select one pronunciation or the other, not both.
And often, by convention (or mutual copying), they end up *all* saying the same thing, as in the case of 浙江.

Only beginners are hypnotized by qingsheng and discuss it endlessly.
When is the last time you failed to understand something because of qingsheng? Or were corrected for not using it?

first of all, it's verb (发) + object (神经), should not be translated as adjective

this is a very colloquial construct, usually used in heated arguments (or when talking about them to a third party)

some examples from Baidu:
伤了女朋友的心,因为一直对我都很好,忽然就发神经了
为什么女朋友总发神经?
女朋友总无理取闹,发神经怎么办?

【现代汉语规范词典】[口]比喻丧失理智,言行违反常情
【现代汉语词典】发疯
ABC: v.o. go mad/crazy; be out of one's mind

Editor: I think it's fine to have both a verb definition and an adjective definition (like ABC has).
It's used adjectivally, as in 你去死,贱格变态发神经的人,...

Editor: Well, there are a dozen or more others like this.
I don't feel inclined to look for more, nor do I feel much need to trim them back.

Can one extort without threats? Also not sure if "a protection racket" is appropriate.

Editor: Good point.
"extortion always involves a written or verbal threat whereas robbery can occur without any verbal or written threat"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extortion

The author of the entry may have been thinking of phrases such as the legal term "extortion with threats to kill" etc.

"protection racket" is a specific type of extortion:
"an extortion scheme whereby a criminal group or individual coerces a victim (usually a business) to pay money, supposedly for protection services against violence or property damage. Racketeers coerce reticent potential victims into buying "protection" by demonstrating what will happen if they don't"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protection_racket

On the other hand some sources like NC include "to racketeer" in their definitions, and blackmail is a specific type of extortion, too, just as protection rackets are.
Anyway, I guess we can leave it out of the definition, at least for now.

Interestingly, from some examples I read, it seems that 敲詐 has the same (loose) sense of "charging exorbitant fee" that "extortion" can have in English.

we already have zhīshēng, but this word actually has two different readings and meanings:

zhīshēng
[cheep] 发细小的声音
他甚至没吱声

zīshēng
[make a sound (as when speaking, coughing etc.)] [方]∶ 做声; 吭声
问他几遍, 他都没吱声

see all the usual references, if needed

==========================

Editor:
"actually has two different readings and meanings" sounds very authoritative, and
"see all the usual references, if needed" suggests that one really should just trust the submitter and that checking might be a waste of time.

The submission is in line with Z's source, but there is no general agreement with this in "all the usual references"

In NC, zi1sheng1 is the pronunciation for both senses ("squeak/chirp/cheep" & "utter a sound"). NC has no "zhi1sheng1" -- and 吱[zhi1] has only an onomatopoeic meaning in NC.

吱声 is #2 in my IME when I type "zhisheng", but it's not there at all if I type "zisheng"

In Chinesepod, the "utter sth" sense is pronounced zhi1 ~ http://chinesepod.com/tools/glossary/entry/%E5%90%B1%E5%A3%B0

M says the "utter sth" sense can be either zi1sheng1 or zhi1sheng1

“吱声”的吱念"zhi"还是"zi"
A: 这是哪里查到的啊?我是哈尔滨的,我们基本就说普通话,我们平时都念"zhisheng"如果念成"zisheng"好像大舌头的感觉,鸡西那边这样说话。
B: 我是从汉典网上查的,而且我日常听到的都是“zī shēng”,倒是觉得“zhī shēng”舌头打结。
C: 应该是zhisheng
D: 应该是吱zi声...

lots of examples on Baidu/Google, search for 纹了, here's one: 在额头纹了‘穷’字

Editor: Although M has a verb sense, GF – which you have previously held up as authoritative – says it's just a noun, and this stance is corroborated by other sources such as New Century, New Age etc. as well as in writings online. E.g.

Although you wrote (in an email) that you "just thought this was pretty obvious" (that 紋 is a verb "to tattoo"), on balance this view doesn't seem to be accepted.

most ch-ch dictionaries have this meaning and reading, including MoE and 漢語大詞典

originally, there was no 花 character. 華 stood for "flower". 花 and 華 are still interchangeable in Japanese, and at least *some* HK people say that 華 in their name indeed stands for flower, not China

Editor: [richwarm]: Interchangeable? I think it would look quite strange to write 生け花 as 生け華.

as for the Chinese sense:

M: 植物的花朵。如:「春華秋實」。同「花」。
Z: 古同“花”,花朵。
【漢語大詞典】:花。

in 辞海, for example, you can find certain x花 words (like 松花) as 亦作"松华", so apparently they indeed are variants.
Diff:
# 華 华 [hua1] /(archaic) flower/
+ 華 华 [hua1] /old variant of 花[hua1]/flower/
