肖想,非规范性词组。含贬义,在闽南方言中有“妄想”之意。

涵义
肖想,即对他人或物抱有不切实际的幻想。多用于讽刺他人“癞蛤蟆想吃天鹅肉”。有时也写作“宵想”。来自闽南话,台湾国语中经常用到。

Editor:
Global Times ~

------------------------------

Editor: I fear I will get a query about the pinyin from Matic. To forestall that, I'll explain upfront.

中超, when it refers to a Chinese supermarket, is a common noun, not a proper name.
Accordingly, there is a strong case that the pinyin should not be capitalized.

The pinyin for 中餐 is not capitalized in any of the following dictionaries:
NC, NA, PLC, K, GF, ACE, CCD and Oxford.
Why not? Doesn't 中 mean "China" here?
Answer: Because 中餐 is not a proper noun; it's a common noun.

Similar thing in English:
"macadamia" is *derived* from the name of a person, but "macadamia" itself is not the name of an entity; it's a common noun -- it's a kind of tree.

macadamia
Origin: Modern Latin, named after John Macadam (1827–65), Australian chemist.
https://www.lexico.com/definition/macadamia

"chinaware" likewise is spelled with a small "c".

On the other hand, 中超, when it refers to the football league, *is* the name of an entity, so its pinyin is capitalized.

Came up in conversation today; specifically the 林/山 variants - I found the 野 variant looking this up online.

Originally I defined this as: /a novice secludes into the woods, a master disappears into the crowd/, but I think this definition is truer to the Chinese.

小隐隐于野,大隐隐于市是指闲逸潇洒的生活不一定要到林泉野径去才能体会得到,更高层次隐逸生活是在都市繁华之中,在心灵净土独善其身,找到一份宁静。 [1]

https://supchina.com/2021/06/22/chicken-parenting-is-chinas-helicopter-parenting-on-steroids/
In recent years, the term “chicken baby” (鸡娃 jīwá) has become popular in China, with the increase of obsessive middle-class Chinese parents in megacities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. “Chicken” comes from the colloquial expression dǎjīxuè 打鸡血, which translates literally to “inject chicken blood.” Chicken blood treatment was a fad during the Cultural Revolution, mostly in the countryside. People waited in line, rooster in hand, to receive fresh chicken blood — the cure-all for countless ills, from baldness to infertility to cancer. It was allegedly a great victory for the people, not so much for young roosters. Once the golden age for health gurus passed, the madness over chicken blood subsided — but the phrase survived as an expression to refer to agitation or hyperactivity.

LIE DOWN
Tǎng Píng | 躺平
Lie-down, also known as lie-downism or lie-flat, became a popular expression on Chinese social media around May 2021. Young people use the phrase to describe a passive-aggressive way of resisting involution, or hyper-competition. State-owned media criticized lie-downism, with some internet platforms censoring the phrase.

Lie-downism rose to prominence in May 2021 as a defeatist response to traditional markers of success, including a competitive career, property ownership, and parenting. It is also used to denote despair towards the widening gap between the rich and the poor, and the lack of upward mobility. Closely related was the phrase involution.

Hashtags related to lie-downism racked up millions of views on Weibo and other social media platforms, as state-owned media criticized the purported cynicism. On May 27, 2021, the Communist Youth League’s official Weibo account posted a tribute to young patriots, using the hashtag #当代年轻人从未选择躺平#, which roughly translates to “contemporary youths have never wanted to lie down.” It disabled comment function after drawing thousands of angry replies. Many Weibo users refuted CYL by saying that they would happily serve the country, but not the “capital.” One comment saved by CDT Chinese reads: “Now young people can still say that it’s ok to serve the country, but not ok to serve the capitalists. In 10 or 20 years, when young people say no to both, I’d love to see the result of this development model which bars the general public from enjoying the fruit.” Other key opinion leaders also weighed in on lie-downism, including the editor-in-chief of the Global Times Hu Xijin, famous entrepreneur Yu Minhong, and state TV host Bai Yansong. They have all been ridiculed for being self-serving and tone-deaf to young people’s struggles.

On May 30, 2021, Douban group for lie-downism which had close to ten thousand members was banned.

tǎng píng | Lie-downism
“躺平主义”近日成为中国互联网流行词。它的意思是,年轻人不买房、不买车、不结婚、不生娃、不消费,维持生存最低标准,拒绝成为他人赚钱的机器和被剥削的奴隶。听上去,它就是老一代人所说的思想消极,不求上进,当一天和尚撞一天钟。不过它更具有主动选择和反抗行动的意义,因此被称为中国年轻人的思想解放,一种无声和无奈的反抗。

https://www.newyorker.com/culture/cultural-comment/chinas-involuted-generation
The Chinese term for involution, neijuan, which is made up of the characters for “inside” and “rolling,” suggests a process that curls inward, ensnaring its participants within what the anthropologist Xiang Biao has described as an “endless cycle of self-flagellation.” Involution is “the experience of being locked in competition that one ultimately knows is meaningless,” Biao told me. It is acceleration without a destination, progress without a purpose, Sisyphus spinning the wheels of a perpetual-motion Peloton.

https://www.sixthtone.com/news/1006391/how-one-obscure-word-captures-urban-chinas-unhappiness
The involution these scholars spoke about and the one used nowadays are very different. But they all convey a sense of “lacking significant progress, and coming up to a dead end.”

https://www.whatsonweibo.com/the-concept-of-involution-neijuan-on-chinese-social-media/
What Is ‘Involution’?
As explained by Jialing Xie in this top buzzword article on What’s on Weibo, involution describes the economic situation in which as the population grows, per capita wealth decreases. Since recently, this word has come to be used to represent the competitive circumstances in academic or professional settings in China where individuals are compelled to overwork because of the standard raised by their peers who appear to be even more hardworking.

2017年末,內卷化一詞逐步進入公眾視野,其含義也發生了變化。格爾茨、黃宗智等學者認為內卷是指缺乏經濟競爭導致農耕社會未能進入工業化轉化成資本主義經濟。而在網絡上,內卷這一詞卻出現了語義偏移,用來指代內部惡性競爭。

"examination syllabus" does seem to be used in some places, but it's a term that could be confusing for anyone who isn't familiar with it, because a "syllabus" is typically a summary of the main points of a *course of study*, not of an *exam*.

Ans. ... 猩化是什么意思,我不知道。
普化我也没查到,估计是“(方言)变成普通话”的意思。

Ans. ... “猩化”本来就是十分规笵主义(乃至于reactionary)的術语,對新派方言使用者非常不友好,而且已经有点圈圈家族(cycle clan)那味儿了——把具备特定特征的人開除人籍。至于反對方言的“猩化”進程是不是规笵主义可能我也不用说了,请尽管从上一段的定性推導一下罢。

'BM Style'
In fact, such extreme viral skinny challenges pop up so frequently on Chinese social media that there are even niche categories. The Uniqlo trend is an example of "BM Style", a teen fashion aesthetic involving crop tops, slim jeans and short skirts.

It takes its name from the Italian clothing brand Brandy Melville which mostly stocks one-size-fits-all pieces. Its standard size is comparable to the extra-small size from other brands.

The trend started gaining popularity last year, after young Chinese women began sharing pictures of themselves in crop tops and dresses by the brand with the hashtag "test if you can wear the BM style".

[...]

There has been criticism of a viral and unverified size chart indicating how much a "BM girl" should weigh according to her height - one example given was that a woman with a height of 160cm should weigh only 43kg.

[...]

"The scary thing about the 'BM style' is that everyone knows it is unhealthy, and yet they feel pressured to pursue this aesthetic. Some people overlook their health for this - it's just not worth it," said one user.

EGG FRIED RICE
dàn chǎofàn 蛋炒饭
What is said to have killed Mao Zedong's oldest son, Mao Anying. The younger Mao, who had studied abroad in Russia, volunteered to fight in the Korean War and was assigned to be Peng Dehuai's Russian translator. According to legend, Mao Anying cooked fried rice with eggs in the daytime, against military regulation. The eggs were a rare delicacy at the time and had just been sent to Peng Dehuai from Kim Il-sung. Spotting the smoke from the fire, an American plane dropped napalm on the site. Unable to escape, Mao perished in the flames.

Regardless of the truth of the story, Mao Anying did in fact die in 1950 when his camp in a Korean cave was napalmed.

Netizens credit egg fried rice for saving them from North Korea's fate as a country ruled by dynastic autocrats, since it destroyed Mao Zedong's heir. On Baidu Tieba, one user wonders:

Boqilai (@勃起来): I heard that, if it weren't for egg fried rice, you wouldn't be able to get online today; if not for egg fried rice, you would be sent to the countryside to for reeducation as a poor farmer...? (June 11, 2012)

听说如果没有蛋炒饭,你今天上不了网;没有蛋炒饭,你现在会在上山下乡插队落户接受贫下中农再教育 。。。。。????[Chinese]

Weibo users need only write "if it weren’t for egg fried rice" to invoke the alternate history China has avoided.

You may be wondering why you see photos of fried rice on November 25 all over Chinese social media. The special occasion is the Chinese Thanksgiving Day, or the Fried Rice Festival, celebrated by the Chinese around the world. It’s the 65th death anniversary of Mao Zedong’s eldest son Mao Anying who died in bombings by the U.N. forces in the Korean War on November 25, 1950. Legend has it that Mao Junior was eating egg fried rice in the Chinese army’ s headquarters in late morning as other troops had ducked into bomb shelters when the U.N. bombers approached. [....]

https://globalvoices.org/2015/11/25/chinese-netizens-have-their-own-version-of-thanksgiving-rice-with-egg-day/
Very few people know that just like the United States and Canada, China also has a Thanksgiving Day — albeit an informal one. Indeed, netizens invented the holiday a few years back as political satire commenting on the death of Mao Anying, former Chinese leader Mao Zedong's eldest son, during the Korean War (1950-1953).

Fried rice with egg is the traditional meal. Why? Because Mao Anying was killed by an air strike during the Korean War when he was reheating the rice for a late breakfast, according to historical literature on Mao Anying and the Korean War written by former People's Liberation Army solider Wu Lijin. It is believed that the smoke from the fried rice alongside burned apple peel caught the enemy air force's attention and led to the bombing.

For those who celebrate the Chinese Thanksgiving on November 25, they believe that had Mao Anying survived the war, China would have become like North Korea. Hence, they use the occasion to express their thanks to the “enemy” air force.

This year, many Chinese netizens moved to Twitter — which is technically unavailable in China, but uncensored if you can circumvent the official block on the service — to celebrate the Chinese Thanksgiving Day. Participants published messages for the day and photos of fried rice under the hashtags #蛋炒饭节 (Rice With Egg Day) or #中国感恩节 (Chinese Thanksgiving).

不是 (bù shì) → bú shì → 不儿 (búr)

and again:

"I've kept the main pinyin as standard as possible and I've added my best attempt at pinyin-izing this colloquial pronunciation in the definition."

Editor: Too hard for me to verify. No video or audio clips provided.
We would be documenting a written form (不儿) that "[n]ever gets written down".

At least one "highly-rated" answerer in the linked HiNative webpage disagrees with the question asker who said that 是不是 is pronounced [shi bu ri]:

I've kept the main pinyin as standard as possible and I've added my best attempt at pinyin-izing these colloquial pronunciations in the definition.
-----------------------------------

Editor: In my opinion, for this type of entry, we need someone with expertise in Chinese phonetics to process. I am not such a person, and nobody else has stepped forward to process in the two years since this was submitted. I'll do my best now, but I hope I don't have to deal with this sort of thing again. It's hard to find reliable sources for contracted forms. And there are sometimes multiple contracted pronunciations for a word, which makes things even more complicated. The prospect of checking all these pronunciations is not something I'd enjoy doing. No video/audio samples were provided in this submission, and even if they were, I wouldn't be the best person to transcribe them into pinyin.

Wikipedia mentions examples like 中央電視台, which is apparently sometimes pronounced like 裝墊兒台. I think this whole area is outside of what we can reasonably deal with.

Regarding 不儿道, I've gone with the pronunciation given in the quoted Wikipedia article: /puɻ55 tao51/
So I've used 1st tone (55) for 不儿 instead of 4th tone (51).

罐头笑声(英语:Laughter track)也称背景笑声,是指在“观众应该笑”的片段插入预先录制好的笑声,这种“机械式”笑声最早在美国电视情景剧中使用,后来也见于搞笑综艺等电视节目中。

名称由来
“罐头”的美式英文称为“can”,由于录制好的笑声、音乐等播出来总会是千篇一律,就好像罐头食品吃起来总是同一个味道一样,所以这种笑声被称为罐头笑声(canned laughter)。

It also redirects from the English page "laugh track"

I thought the pronunciation would be hard to prove for this, but:

大尾巴狼,顾名思义是指一条尾巴大的狼。正宗叫法应该是大尾(Yǐ)(第三声)巴狼,同义词还有大瓣儿蒜、大象等。在有些情况下,大尾巴狼有时还会被特指那没有良心的对象,跟白眼狼有相近的意思,在这种情况下属于贬义词。

0) "I thought the pronunciation would be hard to prove"
Plenty of sources say 尾 is pronounced [yi3] here, but I doubt that 巴 has first tone.

1) A "big bad wolf" is an archetypal villain.
I don't see evidence that 大尾巴狼 has that meaning.

2) "unscrupulous person" misses what seems to be the key feature of a 大尾巴狼: *feigning*.
As your quote says: 大尾巴狼 ... 同义词还有大瓣儿蒜.

装大瓣蒜是什么意思?
(歇后语):水仙不开花——装蒜

3) Web explanations of the meaning of 大尾巴狼:

(Note: NA defines 装蒜 as "to pretend not to know; feign/fake ignorance", and defines 装孙子 as a synonym of 装蒜.)

4) Example of usage:

https://notesbooks.wordpress.com/tag/%E6%AE%BA%E5%90%9B%E9%A6%AC%E8%80%85%E9%81%93%E6%97%81%E5%85%92/

For an ambitious country that is committed to progress, praise is meaningless, and can even be harmful. As the saying goes, ‘the king’s horses died from the children on the side of the road’. The spectators on the side of the road are constantly exhorting the horse to run faster, and the owner kept pushing it, but at the end, the horse died from exhaustion. China is now in a critical period of transformation and modernisation, what it needs is not cheap praise and pretty songs, but for the real problems to be bluntly pointed at, and the resources of good thinking. As Lu Xun said, ‘revealing the agony helped find out the cure’. In this sense, Lee Kuan Yew, Fukuyama and Kornai are not only the three foreigners who best understood China, but also the most worthy of respect. Their advice deserves careful attention, and deep reflection.
