What could be more uninteresting, and of less importance? We are unlikely to ever know what specific bird (if any) this was. Who cares what is written in various English dicts? Read Shuowen, Kangxi, and then try to pinpoint the bird (keeping in mind that they were guessing themselves). Shuowen f.i has 雚，小爵也。Yeah,"small bird", pretty open. But some zealous truthseeker translated it as "small cup". Couldn't read the fine print I guess. |
