can infer that it is an abbreviation of unusually, it just look weird that it is abbreviated but it don't have a period. in contrast with *lit.* and *fig.*

It's an abbreviation commonly used in dictionaries.
Dictionaries often use abbreviations without a period, such as "vt" for "transitive verb" (rather than "v.t.")
We use "sb" for "somebody" and "etc" for "et cetera".
But this is the only entry where we didn't use a period with "usu".
