Context is needed to understand what is meant by "position" and "front".
Both words have various meanings that do not apply here.

阵地 does have figurative usage as well, but the main thing I want to do here is make the original meaning clearer.

He was sent to spy out enemy positions.
他被派去侦察敌人的阵地。

A machine gun opened up from a concealed position.
机枪从隐蔽阵地开火。

We shouldn't yield our position to the enemy.
我们绝不能放弃阵地给敌人。
Diff:
- 陣地 阵地 [zhen4 di4] /position/front/
+ 陣地 阵地 [zhen4 di4] /(military) position/front/
