1. This would be better expressed as a v.o. (dissect sparrow) rather than as a noun phrase (preliminary test on a small sample).

2. Why "preliminary"? The point is that one doesn't need to go any further than dissecting one or two if they are typical cases.
(Sparrows are seen as all being more or less alike.)
