<< review queue entry 65930 >> There's already an entry for 甚[shen2] as a variant of 什[shen2], but not for this word where it appears. This variant seems to be most popular in Hong Kong. This article https://www.cuhk.edu.hk/ics/clrc/crcl_1/chang_1.pdf explains that "香港人一般以「什麼」為俗寫,「甚磨」才是正字,大概是「甚」,字筆畫多,「什」字筆畫少,以「什」代「甚」國內便通行「什麼」而少用「甚麼」。這其實是一個誤會。" --------------------------------- Editor: > "There's already an entry for 甚[shen2] as a variant of 什[shen2]" That's right. CC-CEDICT has (1) an entry for 什麼 and (2) an entry that says 甚 is a variant of 什. But we consider it unnecessary to spell out the consequences: 甚麼 is a variant of 什麼 幹甚麼 is a variant of 幹什麼 沒甚麼 is a variant of 沒什麼 甚麼的 is a variant of 什麼的 甚麼事 is a variant of 什麼事 etc. It's the job of a dictionary search engine to deduce from (1) and (2) that 甚麼 is a variant of 什麼 (and likewise for 幹甚麼, 沒甚麼 etc.) Or at least, that's the basis on which we have been operating for some years. So we, as cc-cedict editors, note *single-character* variants, but not multi-character words and phrases (if their variant status can be inferred by a search engine). |
