* Simply “same as 斑竹[ban1 zhu2]” will also do, but I think explaining the name 湘妃竹 is useful.

名 斑竹。相传帝舜南巡苍梧而死, 他的两个妃子娥皇、女英在湘水上望着苍梧山哭泣, 眼泪洒在竹子上, 成了斑点, 故称。

斑竹(学名:Phyllostachys bambusoides f. lacrima-deae)又称湘妃竹。是禾本科竹亚科刚竹属植物桂竹的变型,但也很可能只是桂竹的异名而已。
